Discover my journey from Oregon, to Brazil and then back to the United States. I went from working for Riot Games, to launching my own video game studio, Playgig.
In 1981, I was born in Eugene, Oregon. Three months later, my family and I moved back to Brazil where I would spend my childhood and adolescence. At the time, I didn't know that the little blue passport sitting in my dresser drawer would one day become my golden ticket to a life I had only dreamed about.
In 2021, mid-pandemic, I decided it was time to take another risk. With the support of my wife and 3 daughters behind me, I was able to launch Playgig Game Studio. A year in, I am reminded of my journey up to this point. I feel pride in the life and home that I've built in America and am excited to see where the next years will take me.
I grew up playing games but like many gamers, I didn’t know much about the industry and how to make it a viable career. Then I was invited to join Riot Games in the early days of League of Legends back in 2011.
I love recruiting people and building teams. Making games is all about finding talented people and supporting them to become successful. Individual motivation coupled with high standards of quality are the two key ingredients to the magic of making unique and memorable games.
Fundraising is definitely one of the most challenging aspects of my job. As CEO, I need to set the vision, hire a great team, make product decisions that can make or break the company. But without the support of investors none of this would be possible. I have to constantly meet with new investors, promote the company and play that game sort of speak. For example, in a very short meeting if I don’t make a good first impression, they might move on to the next startup – there is a lot of competition for funding in our industry.
I strongly believe that diversity enriches the output of our work. We need different points of view and a culture that celebrate these differences because in the end it will elevate the business results.
I think people would describe me as someone pretty chilled outside of work, but determined to follow what I believe in at the same time. I heard I can be pretty intimidating when I get upside down, but thankfully that’s been rare recently and I’ve been a lot more mindful about it.
I’m a proud parent of 3 kids and husband, my family is my biggest supporter and I consider that an accomplishment.
I wanted to create a new and unique game studio. A place where it is safe to express your creativity and realize your full potential.
I was scared at first. I didn’t know exactly what we were building, whether I could get the money to do it, if I could keep myself motivated while constantly facing new challenges. I read a few books, talked to family and friends a lot and found support within my inner circle.
I want them to feel that we’re here for them. We’re making games for them to play with friends, feel part of a community and feel good when they spend money on content and new experiences. I hope to make a positive impact in their lives by bringing people together and leaving fun long lasting memories to them.
I’m focused on building Playgig’s first game and can’t wait to start playing the game with the gaming community sometime next year. After that we’ll look into expanding our original IP into more games, as well as movies and real world products in the future
I think they would say that I’m a driven individual, accessible, open communication, and transparent with what’s going on. I also heard that I can drive them crazy sometimes when things change rapidly. I don’t micromanage because I believe in empowering every individual to take risks in order to do their best work. However from time to time I might need to jump into a specific issue and I recognize that I can be intense or ambiguous.
